Data for Generative AI Improvement on LinkedIn: What You Need to Know

November 13, 2025

AI is everywhere these days—writing assistants, summary features, content suggestions. And yep, LinkedIn is no exception. The platform now uses member data to train and fine‑tune its generative AI tools. That’s big. But like anything, it comes with trade‑offs. Let’s walk through the good, the not‑so‑good, and how you can control it.

✅ The Pros: What’s in It for You

Better AI‑powered features. When LinkedIn uses large sets of data, its generative AI tools (like writing suggestions or content prompts) can get smarter and more helpful.

Improved platform experience. More accurate suggestions, more relevant features, and tools that fit into your workflow better.

Shared benefit. Your data, when anonymised and aggregated, can contribute to innovations that benefit the entire community of professionals on LinkedIn.

⚠️ The Cons: What You Should Be Aware Of

Default opt‑in means less control up front. LinkedIn has set the “Data for Generative AI Improvement” feature to be on by default in many regions. If you don’t act, your data may be used.

Past data use is not reversible. Even if you choose to toggle off the setting, LinkedIn points out that any data previously used to train AI models will likely remain part of those models.

Privacy questions. Using your public posts, profile information, and activities to train AI raises questions about transparency, consent, and how “your data” is defined.

Regional differences. For example, LinkedIn currently excludes the EU, EEA and Switzerland from certain parts of this data‑use for generative AI training—but other regions may not have the same protection.

🔄 How to Toggle the Setting (Turn It On or Off)

Want to check or change whether your data is being used for generative AI training? Here’s how:

On Desktop

-Sign into your LinkedIn account.

-Click your profile picture (top‑right), then select Settings & Privacy.

-In the left menu, choose Data privacy.

-Under How LinkedIn uses your data, find the section labeled Data for Generative AI Improvement

-Toggle the switch to Off if you don’t want your data used for that purpose.

On Mobile App

-Open the LinkedIn app and tap your profile picture.

-Tap Settings.

-Go to Data privacy.

-Tap Data for Generative AI Improvement and toggle it to Off to opt‑out.

Note: Toggling off stops future data from being used for training content‑creation models, but it doesn’t erase what was already used.

🧭 Should You Turn It Off or Keep It On?

Here are some quick questions to help you decide:

-Do you care a lot about how your data is used, even if it’s aggregated and anonymised? Then you might toggle off.

-Are you comfortable with LinkedIn using your public content and profile for training if it means better AI tools? Then you may keep it on.

-Do you live in a region with strong data‑protection laws and want to check if you’re covered? It’s worth verifying.

-Are you posting highly sensitive content on LinkedIn and want extra control? Then opt‑out might make sense.

Final Thoughts

Using your data to fuel generative AI improvements offers real upside — better features, smarter tools, and innovation. But it also comes with important considerations around consent, control and visibility. The good news is you do have a choice. Take a moment to check your settings and make the decision that fits your comfort level and professional brand.
